has anyone ever heard of this?

i got a letter from something called the national dean's list the other day. i've never heard of it and i was wondering whether anyone knew if it was legit or whether it was just some sort of scam to get money. it said that a teacher or professor had to nominate me, but i really can't think of a time where i did so amazingly in the class that the professor would do that. please let me know if you know anything!

i got one of those too. and same thing with me, i really don't know of a teacher who would nominate me. but it probably goes by gpa each year. i think it's a lot like the "who's who among american high school students." i don't think it's really worth the money to buy a book because it lists thousands of students in really small font. but if you just accept the nomination and buy nothing, it's completely free, which doesn't hurt at all. i'm pretty sure they don't give your name or address to other companies. it's kinda neat to know you're listed in a book as one of the smartest college students in america!

Actually what it is...is a list of names and addresses that can be sold to companies, colleges, agencies etc. Places with something to market.

In the case of the National Dean's List, Who's Who, etc the names are collected through a number of different ways. Standardized test scores are frequently one for the HS Who's Who.

Rip off - be wary of anything like that that just comes in the mail.

If in doubt, ask around at your school, talk to professors etc.

So here's a good story...I'm on the dean's "other list" right now for one bad semester that I had, and I got invited to be on national dean's list. WTF?

Ripoff. They get your name, send you a letter indicating that you've been nominated, and you say "ooooh, how cool, now I'll have to buy a copy of the book so I can show off my listing" and send them your $. Plus, even if they don't proactively sell the list to other companies, there's nothing to prevent companies from buying a copy of the book on their own, and hello junk mail!

At 15, I was able to see right through the Who's Who boosheeet.

I got this stuff mailed to my home address, and I always told Mommy to throw it away without opening it. JUNK.

Stupidest marketing ploy aimed to get idiots to buy their book EVER.

Its up there with paying $200 to become a Certified Student Leader. Some of my friends actually paid to be certified. What a rip off.
