in a small nutshell
An AI is initiated into a sorority when she is not an undergrad. Usually later in life. She may have had affilitations with a sorority in college but was never initiated. Or she may have not had a chance to pledge/join in college but later on decided she'd like to. The process for becoming an AI varies by sorority. Once initiated, you receive all the rights and priviledges as if you'd joined in college.

wiss22 - Our chapter had AI because we had been a local sorority. When we went National, all of the Alumnae from the local sorority were invited back to become members of ADPi. Those that were initiated were initiated as Alumnae members. It was a nice benefit that was offered by the sorority and helped us to keep a good support group and keep the people involved that had been the history of the group as a local sorority.

wiss, AI involves mainly National Greek Social Organizations! NIC, NPC, or NHPC?
Is yours a local, proffesional or anyother than the above?
That may be a determining factor.

Tom, Theta Phi Alpha is NPC, but maybe they don't traditionally initiate alumnae members...?

Re: Ai
Alumnae Initiates are women who have already graduated or are no longer in college (or perhaps they never went to college).
They did not pledge and initiate while in college, so they are doing so afterwards. Many people erroneously believe that you can only be pledged and initiated while in college, but I can tell that that is just not so!

thanks
thanks everyone. that makes sense now. i think theta phi alpha does do something like that, but as someone said, it is untraditional. i remember when my chapter was celebrating it's 10th anniversary at clarion, i spoke with a national officer about initiating the founding sisters (local sorority) of my chapter. i think it's more along the lines of what valpogal's sorority went through.
thanks again!

Is your group a traditionally Catholic sorority? I am not familiar with it (sorry!).

About Theta Phi Alpha . . .
It is a traditionally Catholic sorority, but like the traditionally Jewish sororities Alpha Epsilon Phi and Sidma Delta Tau, religion no longer plays a part in the member selection process. They were founded at the University of Michigan, I think, and are one of the newer NPC organizations (although still very old, considering the youngest of the NPC organizations was founded in 1917).

Plus....
...Theta Phi Alpha was essentially founded by a Catholic priest! The Alpha chapter of Theta Phi is at the University of Michigan and the priest (Father Brown?) wanted Catholic girls to have an organization where they could feel at home since there was prejudice against Catholics at that time. The Theta Phi motto is one of my faves: "Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring" and it is attributed to St Catherine of Siena...

Correction
If you're talking current NPC organizations, the youngest were founded in 1917-- Delta Phi Epsilon on March 17th and Sigma Delta Tau on March 25th.

Oops, yup, you're right -- I always think it's later for some reason.
