Does the concept of "legacy" exist in NPHC sororities?
 

This is for any ladies in NPHC sororities...does the concept of "legacy" exist in NPHC sororities?

Here is an excerpt from an NPC group, AOII, just so that the definition of legacy is clear...

"When possible, a chapter shall grant the privilege of membership
to a sister, daughter, or granddaughter, or, through marriage,
the sister, daughter or granddaughter of an initiated
member of AOII.” These words are taken from our International Bylaws, Title II, Article III, Section 1. OurBook of Policies further states that “every known legacy shall be given special consideration in membership selection.”

A legacy should be a qualified potential member in her own right --
grades, activities, accomplishments, and overall compatibility with the collegiate
chapter are to be considered. Collegiate members are asked to give special consideration to legacies during membership selection out of courtesy to the AOII sister
to whom she is related.

Special consideration -- What does this mean? This does not imply that we should
“bend the rules” or “lower the standards” in order to issue an invitation to pledge to a
legacy. This does not imply that we should hold our legacies to higher standards or
judge them differently than other potential members. In the words of AOII's Executive Director, we should give legacies special attention, our genuine friendliness, our family concern and the love they deserve during the recruitment process."

Oh my! :O - my grandmother was an AOPi and I actually fainted, yes fainted, during a friendship circle at their party. So my being a legacy is why on earth they invited me back!! hehe http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Seriously- at my chapter- legacies were top consideration out of total respect for the alum sister who was her mother, sister or grandmother and who also probably wrote a rec for the girl too.

We see someone who is a legacy much like you do. The one difference is we can include those who are members of brother and sister organizations as well. For instance I am a member of Phi Beta Sigma as is my father but my mother is a member of Zeta Phi Beta. Therefore I am a double legacy. One difference is it seems as if you are held to higher standards while seeking membership. Nothing that would necessarily prevent you from entrance but simply that you would know history better since it is something you may have grown up around.
